چکیده

We first demonstrate that globular cluster G1 could have been formed by tidal interaction between M31 and a nucleated dwarf galaxy (dE,N). Our fully self-consistent numerical simulations show that during tidal interaction between M31 and G1's progenitor dE,N with M B ∼ −15 mag and its nucleus mass of ∼ 10 7 M ⊙ , the dark matter and the outer stellar envelope of the dE,N are nearly completely stripped whereas the nucleus can survive the tidal stripping because of its initially compact nature. The naked nucleus (i.e., G1) has orbital properties similar to those of its progenitor dE,N. The stripped stars form a metal-poor ([Fe/H] ∼ −1) stellar halo around M31 and its structure and kinematics depend strongly on the initial orbit of G1's progenitor dE,N. We suggest that the observed large projected distance of G1 from M31 (∼ 40 kpc) can give some strong constraints on the central density of the dark matter halo of dE,N. We discuss these results in the context of substructures of M31's stellar halo recently revealed by Ferguson et al. (2002).

Nitrogen Overabundance: Globular Cluster and Halo Formation

Halo globular clusters pose four succinct issues that must be solved in any scenario of their formation: single-age, single metallicity stellar populations; a lower limit ([Fe/H]∼-2.3) to their average metallicity; comprising only 1% of the stellar halo mass, and being among the oldest stars in our Galaxy. New spectra are presented of Galactic stars and integrated spectra of Galactic globular c...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Deep HST V - and I-Band Observations of the Halo of M31: Evidence for Multiple Stellar Populations

We present deep (V ≃ 27) V and I -band stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope’s WFPC2 in two fields in the M31 halo. These fields are located 32 and 50 from the center of M31 approximately along the SE minor axis at the locations of the M31 globular star clusters G302 and G312 respectively. The M31 halo luminosity functions are not consistent with a single high-metallicity...

Forming Globular Cluster Systems Semi - Analytically

We describe a scheme for the formation of globular cluster systems in early-type galaxies using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Operating within a ΛCDM cosmology, we assume that metal-poor globular clusters are formed at high-redshift in pre-galactic fragments, and that the subsequent gas-rich merging of these fragments leads to the formation of metal-rich clusters. We compare our re...

Evidence for Stellar Substructure in the Halo and Outer Disk of M

We report the discovery of significant stellar substructure in the halo and outer disk of our nearest large galactic neighbour, M31. Our deep panoramic survey with the Isaac Newton Telescope Wide Field Camera currently maps out an area of ≈ 25 ⊓⊔ around M31, extending along the semi-major axis to 55 kpc, and is the first to allow an uninterrupted study of the density and color distribution of i...
